Runaway begins with two abused teens escaping their dilemma of modern family life (being children of alcoholics, abused, neglected) by running away. One boy is so fragile, insecure and totally intimidated it's a wonder he can function at all. His fears and nervous conditions are all he has.

His comrade, however, is the perfect stereotype of a rebellious, independent, ahead of his time, abused child. He has all the answers, and is a sanctuary of security for his timid friend he calls "Bro". Bob has planned the runaway to perfection. He anticipated everything. "Trust me", he tells his "Bro" Steve. But Bob didn't anticipate the dark. Bob didn't anticipate loneliness. Bob didn't anticipate the "Bermudoes".

There is no one for Steve to "trust". Alone in his frenzy, he is adopted by a storybook 'Robin Hood' rival street gang and taken care of as if he were a puppy. He is cared for by the toughest member of the gang with the saddest story, Nancy. He is transformed and educated by the leaders Mac, Doc, Roy and Harviel. Up to and during Steve's transition the story changes from a tearjerker to a comedy. When Steve graduates, however, the book turns into a constant onslaught of action, suspense, surprises and more action!
